Zebras, not broken horses.
Specialized guidance for leaders to build
neuro-inclusive and psychologically
safe construction environments.
That means that everyone can thrive, be it the zebras or the horses.
About Iron & Ember
Iron & Ember is fundamentally re-designing construction
environments to truly value neurodiversity, instead of just accommodating neurodivergent people.
Why? Because neurodiversity means everyone, and
everyone brings unique superpowers to the table.
Guided by authenticity, grit, compassion
and kindness, we help build
environments where everyone thrives.

"There's enormous power in knowing you're a zebra, not a broken horse."
Neurodiversity
Some people have brains wired differently. Neurodiversity (ND) is simply the natural variations in how people think, process information, and react to the world
Neurodivergent conditions include ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and others
The construction workforce is already neurodiverse.
Note: These stats come from UK research (National Federation of Builders & On The Tools) but they closely reflect what we see across the trades in Canada, too.

Non-linear thinking is a competitive edge
When neurodivergent workers are understood, supported, and set up to succeed, something remarkable happens:
Teams improve productivity by 30%. (Deloitte: Neurodiversity at Work)
Neurodivergent people
are the visionaries
The traits of what separates the leaders from the true visionaries are
hallmarks of neurodivergence.
If you work to develop those strengths, you will be sculpting the next generation of executive leadership. That impacts the whole world.
Meet Alex
There is enormous power in knowing you're a zebra, not a broken horse.
Modern leadership is overdue for a redesign, and Alex believes neurodivergent thinkers are the ones to do it. As a late-diagnosed leader who has navigated both the corporate world in the construction industry and the 24/7 structural reality of chronic illness, she has seen firsthand how traditional systems fail brilliant minds.
Today, Alex helps leaders reimagine and reshape environments with universal access to supports to thrive. She believes that neuro-inclusivity includes everyone, so by raising the tides for neurodivergent individuals, you are lifting the boat for others as well.
She believes that there is an opportunity to make an impact on the world by simply making spaces psychologically safe for everyone.
For Alex, it's not about accommodations for a few; it's about systems that work for all.

Training Sessions

Neurodivergence in the wild
Neurodivergent people are the zebras running with the horses.
Most workplaces are built for the horses, and expect zebras to camouflage (hello, stripes!) .
This session looks at what happens when they do, and the cost of masking, misinterpretation, and burnout. It focuses on simple, universal shifts that make the environment work for more people... without singling anyone out.

Effective human interactions
Psychological safety and empathy aren’t soft skills. They’re crucial operational ones.
This session looks at how people communicate under pressure, and how small shifts in clarity, tone, and intent directly impact trust, performance, and outcomes.
Fewer breakdowns, better work. Happier people.

Clark Kents in a world built for Lois Lanes
This isn’t your typical session... it’s a comic book!
Meet the superheroes. Each superhero is a neurodivergent condition (not a stereotype) built from traits that can be enormously powerful in the right conditions.
We don’t gloss over the hard parts. We make sense of them, so you can actually understand what’s going on and what to do with it.

Testimonials

Why Iron & Ember?
1
Lived experience
Alex actually understands construction and what neurodiverse individuals go through in the industry. She helps people externalize and build strategies to stay anchored during the hard stuff.
2
Systems-level view
Alex believes that there is a major opportunity to fundamentally change the way neurodivergence is perceived in Canada and beyond. The only way that can happen is by evaluating & impacting the entire societal ecosystem.
3
Strengths-based and trauma-aware approach
Alex views things through a realistic, trauma aware-lens. No one carries the same trauma, but everyone is carrying a heavy load. Systems can only be transformed with empathy.
4
Support & encouragement
Encouragement and support come in many forms. Alex celebrates wins and is your loudest cheerleader, but she is comfortable having the hard conversations, too.
